Youth Volunteer & Service Opportunities

The following is a general listing of service opportunities with area youth. Tutoring may be pursued on an individual basis through the schools. If none of these opportunities meet your service needs or interests, there are special service requests made throughout the year by community programs and schools that cannot be comprehensively listed.

Alternative Education Programs

Site Description: Provide educational assistance for students who are at-risk of failure in reading and math or who may have family difficulties. Volunteer to tutor for the GED, work on personal responsibility contracts with Alternative to Suspension students, or research career opportunities with adults. The following volunteer opportunities exist at the specified dates and times:

Assist high school students with GED Test Preparation, resume building and career research at the National Guard Armory (behind high school) between the times of 8:30-11:00 a.m. Contact Carol Bryan at 463-5876 (h) afternoon and 784-0622 (cell) in the morning.

Assist with the Adult Basic Education Program serving community adults (18 years or older). The program focuses on job and resume skill development, researching opportunities to advance in current career, GED review, and literacy. Times and location are flexible, call Susan Friski at 348-5202 to develop a schedule (sfriski@adelphia.net

 

Boxerwood Gardens

Agency Mission: Boxerwood Gardens is a 15-acre teaching garden located 2 miles from the W&L campus. Boxerwood Gardens provides hands-on environmental education to elementary children in outdoor "classrooms" and gardening classes for adults. The mission of Boxerwood's non-profit education association is "to inspire and educate people of all ages toward becoming successful and environmentally responsible stewards of the Earth."

Central Elementary School

Site Description: Central Elementary serves Rockbridge County students in grades 1-5.  General need for during school and after-school tutors and is an active participant in the RACSB Mentoring Program.

City of Lexington Office on Youth

Site Description: The Office of Youth provides an after-school program for elementary and middle school students at the Lylburn Downing Community Center. Services include tutoring and assisting in crafts, games, and activities.  The Girl Power program, highlihgtin prevention for teenage girls is an additional, unique service opportunity.

ESOL Group of the Nabors Service League

Site Description: The ESO L Group of the Nabors Service League provides English classes, tutors, and social services to ease Spanish speakers' transitions to Rockbridge County. In addition, volunteers may translate community news, brochures, and emergency materials, or serve as a hotline respondent.

ETC Classes at Rockbridge County Middle School

Site Description: To boost student attitudes toward school, especially reading and writing, students with special needs are enrolled in "enrichment" classes. ETC classes are taught by resource teachers, such as art or music teachers. ETC teachers use their respective disciplines to improve student interest in reading and writing. ETC students are not from lit-rich homes so the extra attention and resource teachers’ unique disciplines makes reading and writing more engaging and relative to students’ lives.

Fairfield Elementary

Site Description: Fairfield Elementary School serves Rockbridge county children from preschool to 5th grade. General need for tutoring during and after school as well as help in classrooms.

Hoofbeats Therapeutic Riding Center

Site description: Hoofbeats offers therapeutic horseback riding to children and adults with disabilities. Special programs are also offered through one-day events for the ARC of Rockbridge, cancer camps for persons receiving treatment, and horse shows for the disabled and able bodied.

Fine Arts in Rockbridge (FAIR)

Site Description: Fine Arts in Rockbridge is committed to providing opportunities for all persons in the Rockbridge area to pursue their interests and develop their talents in the arts through quality educational and performance opportunities. Volunteers can help plan for July’s Summer FAIR, assist with fine arts courses for rising first-graders through high school youth, and from September through June assist with arts programs in the public schools during school day and in after-school activities.

 Lylburn Downing Middle Remediation Periods and/or Homework Help

Site Description: Lylburn Downing Middle School serves 6-8th graders who live in the city of Lexington.  Assist with homework, chess club, and after-school enrichment.

Maury River Middle School

Site Description: Maury River Middle School serves 6-8th graders who live in Rockbridge County.  Assist with Failure Free Reading Program, tutoring, chess club, and after school enrichment.

Woods Creek Montessori

Site Description: Recognizing that all children are born with a yearning for self-development and learning, Montessori programs aim to facilitate the development of the "whole child." Three to four year-old children are encouraged to explore and experience a stimulating and supportive classroom environment, develop self-esteem, and work toward realizing their full potential in all areas of life. Volunteer as a classroom aide.

Mountain View Elementary School

Site Description: Mountain View Elementary School serves Rockbridge County children grades K-5.  There are many volunteer opportunities such as working in the classroom setting with teachers, taking students out of class and reading to them or working with them one-on-one.  Monitor the computer lab while students are working on projects, assist in the art room while students are doing their art work, work in the library helping to find books for students or re-shelving books or assist in Physical Education classes.

Natural Bridge Elementary School

Site Description: Natural Bridge Elementary School serves elementary school-age children in Natural Bridge and Natural Bridge Station.  Consistent need for tutors and enrichment activities.

Natural Bridge Juvenile Correction Center

Site Description: A correctional center for juvenile offenders encouraging scholastic, athletic, artistic and personal development. The unique open campus of the correctional center provides juvenile offenders the opportunity to thrive in a transitional, independent living community. Visit at recreation times to mentor or tutor cadets, coordinate a sports clinic, assist the Halloween carnival, and initiate other enrichment (such as arts or religious) activities.

R.A.C.S.B Mentoring- Be A Buddy

Site Description: Be a buddy to area youth.  A program of Rockbridge Area Community Services Board, the Menoring Program is a preventive option for area youth in need of positive role models, school help, and quality attention. Mentor training and selection occurs in the Fall of every academic year.

Rockbridge Area Head Start

Site Description: Head Start provides pre-school services to 3 and 4 year old children with developmental or financial needs in preparation for school attendance. Head Start Centers are located at Glasgow, Fairfield, Enderly Heights, and Waddell elementary schools.  Consistent need for volunteers as classroom aides, preferably one students at a time.

Rockbridge Area Infant Services and Enrichment

Site Description: RAISE provides home-based services to families with very young children with learning disabilities and other special needs.

Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization

Site Description: Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization provides recreational opportunities that instill good citizenship, sportsmanship, and fun. Athletic programs place primary emphasis on full participation, balanced teams, positive coaching and officiating, and having fun. Competitive spirit is nurtured, but emphasis on winning will not overshadow the goal of providing healthy, challenging, and satisfying experience for all participants.  Coaches needed- soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, baseball in spring/summer.

Rockbridge County High School

Site Description: Rockbridge County High School serves students in grades 9-12 who reside in Rockbridge County.  Serve as an academic coach during the traditional school day.  Prefers to work with Adolescent Chair to develop academic coaching schedules.

Rockbridge Regional Library

Site Description: Public library resources to Rockbridge, Lexington, Buena Vista, and Bath County residents.  Need for after-school programs, literacy tutors, and maintenance.

Roots and Shoots School Garden at Waddell Elementary

Agency Mission: An all school program where the students are the “Shoots” and the community volunteers are the “Roots” and together they grow vegetables, flowers, and herbs during the spring, summer, and fall.  Academic learning is incorporated in the curriculum, especially the science units.

Talent Search

Site Description: Identifies students with the potential to pursue higher education. Most Talent Search students will be the first in their families to attend college. Tutors and mentors are needed to help with homework (primarily Math and English), SAT preparation in the evening, assist with workshops on financial aid, and review college applications and essays.

21st Century Learning Grant

Site Description: The 21st Century Learning Centers at Mountain View Elementary and Natural Bridge Elementary offer students more time and support to reach academic goals.  The centers are also places where students can enjoy enrichment activities that are not always available in rural areas.  Evening activities offer family recreation, computer use, fine arts instruction, parenting skills, and assistance in preparing for the GED test. Afternoon activities are Monday- Thursday 2:45-4:45

Pre-School Classroom for “At-Risk” Children at Mountain View Elementary

Agency Mission: Mountain View Elementary School provides pre-school education for children identified as developmentally at-risk and other children that socio-economically qualify for Head Start services. Consistent need for classroom assistance.

Waddell Elementary

Site Description: Waddell Elementary School is the primary school for children in Lexington city.  Consistent need for tutors, active participants in the RACSB Mentoring Program, and partner I the Hands-Up Service Club with Nabors Service League.

Yellow Brick Road

Site Description: Yellow Brick Road Child Development Center serves children from 6 weeks old to age 6 in a daycare setting. Yellow Brick Road serves both disadvantaged and secure families. Volunteers assist in classroom and during outside play.
