W&L Senior Wins Sarah G. Ball Teaching Award
Lexington, VA • May 4, 2006 — The recipient of the Sarah G. Ball
Teaching Award for 2006 is Joseph Franzen '06 from Lederach, Pa.
"Joe comes from a family of educators and has discovered that he
cannot ignore the calling to teach," says Nannette S. Partlett,
director of teacher education.
"During his senior year at W&L he has prepared for teaching
through his selection of course work and in his extra-curricular
activities. Service learning and the education practicum have placed him
in classrooms in Rockbridge county, and his willingness to serve has
provided opportunities to meet and work with children and families in
the community."
Franzen, who is looking at teaching positions in rural Kentucky and
Virginia, will receive a salary supplement for the first year of
teaching, renewable for a second year.
"We are pleased that Joe has received this award, which has now
supported four graduating seniors committed to teaching in schools
serving disadvantaged children," says Harlan R. Beckley, acting
president of Washington and Lee University. "The award
simultaneously benefits deserving students like Joe and society."
The alternate for the Sarah G. Ball Award for 2006 is Sarah Weil from
Hampstead, Md. Sarah plans to teach in a public high school in Maryland
following graduation.
